Ecuador’s Oil Reserves
International governments and celebrities have started paying Ecuador not to extract oil from the Rain Forest.
An unusual alliance of government, local authorities, shops, drinks companies and US film stars have joined forces to protect the rain forest. In the region of 900m barrels of crude oil are currently being protected.
The initiative known as “crowdfunding” has raised $116m to halt temporarily the exploration of over 700 square miles of Amazonian Rainforest in the Yasuni national park. Development was to begin on the oilfield if the money had not been raised.
